Teaching children to fight sexual violence

Jackie, a 10-year-old girl in the Wakisou district, was in her final year of elementary school and was walking to the village where her school was in the early morning.

One morning, a biker offered to offer her a lift. She accepted the offer because the man came from the same village. She knew about him. On the way, the man stopped his bike, took him to a nearby bush and raped him. The man threatened to kill her if she told anyone.

After the assailants moved to another village, Jackie eventually gathered the courage to tell his mother. Jackie is one of the many children who are vulnerable to sexual abuse by the people around them, including their families, neighbors and teachers. Jackie was able to tell his mother about his abuse. Many are not.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Uganda has been blocked to control the spread of the virus. Lockdowns are intended to protect public health, but they also create fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. It also led to an increase in gender-based violence, including sexual violence against young girls like Jackie.

This sexual violence can be prevented and the people who commit it have stopped. The Ministry of Labor, Gender, and Social Development should work with civil society organizations to create anti-abuse messages that can be shared on media platforms and easily understood by children.

This helps children understand how to report sexual violence, enforce laws properly, and help survivors trust reports of sexual violence. Currently, many children lack the language and understanding when they become victims of sexual violence. I need a message to young people about sexual violence.

A study of violence against children in Uganda found that 57% of girls and 53% of boys facing sexual violence had their first incident by age 16. 6 boys.

About eight in 10 survivors of sexual violence have experienced multiple incidents. Only half of the children who experienced sexual violence told someone about it.

Uganda has laws that protect children from violence. By law, every child has the right to be protected from all forms of violence, including sexual abuse and sexual exploitation and all other forms of physical and mental abuse.

The law also stipulates that anyone illegally intercourse with a girl under the age of 18 may be sentenced to death. But if no incident is reported, the perpetrator cannot be captured.

According to the policy brief on child sexual violence, only about one-quarter of sexual violence cases registered with the Public Prosecutor’s Office will eventually be closed, with only about 5% ending within a year. This is due to the lack of evidence and long court proceedings that burden victims.

Many victims are reluctant to report their case to the police, as the case is not closed. That is, there are few open debates about sexual violence, and those who experience it, including children, need to know what options they have for seeking help other than going to court.

Most often, parents and caregivers suspect that something has happened to their child only after developing serious physical complications of sexual abuse, such as difficulty walking, injuring, and bleeding. Ignorance of children, inability to protect themselves, and poor decision making are one of the reasons for being vulnerable to sexual abuse.

For these reasons, you should create a message about sexual violence directly to inform the victim when they are victimized and inform your child to avoid manipulation by the perpetrator.

The effects of sexual violence on children can be severe. Thousands of children have dropped out of school or become infected with HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases as a result of sexual abuse.

Sexual abuse can be a burden of teen pregnancy, so some girls resort to unsafe abortions that have killed many lives. Worse, if the assailant is a member of a family, this can cause stress, fear, isolation, and depression.

Message campaigns for children and sexual violence can look very ambitious. However, a similar program is already in place for coronaviruses. The government provides children with information about coronavirus prevention through short videos and songs featuring children and cartoons.

Similar methods can be used to convey messages about sexual violence or abuse of children. The Ministry of Education can also be involved to ensure that the message of sexual violence reaches school children.

All this can be accomplished by ensuring that children are notified of sexual violence through the efforts of government, community and civil society organizations.

It is not necessary for the incident to be unconfirmed and unreported due to fear or lack of knowledge by survivors. When tens of thousands of children are out of school because of lockdowns, the community needs to be a safe place for their children to live, a place where girls and boys are not affected by sexual violence.
