Doctors are seeing more children with walking pneumonia
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Emergency room doctors at Baton Rouge General Hospital are seeing more children coming in sicker than they appear.
“A lot of them come in with symptoms of the virus, coughs and congestion, but some of them get a little sick and then a few more weeks later they come in. That's when we see walking pneumonia. “I will.” Dr. Thomas Jader.
Dr. Jader said outbreaks of walking pneumonia are rare at this time of year. The symptoms are mild at first, but worsen over time.
“Sometimes patients just feel a little bit sick, have a fever that lasts longer, have more shortness of breath, or just have symptoms that last a little bit longer than you would expect with a normal virus,” Dr. Jader explained.
It's not just here in Baton Rouge. The CDC announced that since April, there has been a 700% increase in children under 5 visiting ERs nationwide with walking pneumonia. The condition usually starts as a cold, but Dr. Jader urges parents to take precautions if their child's symptoms don't resolve quickly.
“After a few days to a week of viral symptoms, your symptoms should get better,” Dr. Sieder says. “If your symptoms last a little longer, like two to three weeks, it might be a good idea to get tested at that point.”
To keep these symptoms from getting worse, people should get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, wash their hands and wear a mask when appropriate, Dr. Jader said. Over-the-counter cough and cold medicines can help relieve symptoms, but your doctor may need to prescribe antibiotics to completely cure walking pneumonia.
