Four cases of sexually transmitted fungal infections reported in New York
a paper published last week Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report describes four cases of newly emerging sexually transmitted fungal infections in the United States.
The cause of the infection was Trichophyton Type VII (TMVII), a sexually transmitted fungus that causes tinea genitalis (tinea cruris). TMVII infections have been reported in patients who had contact with sex workers in Southeast Asia and men who have sex with men (MSM) in France. The first case in the United States was reported in June in a man who reported having sexual contact with multiple men while traveling in Europe and California.
Four patients were diagnosed with ringworm between April and July, and fungal culture and DNA sequencing identified TMVII as the cause of their infections. All four patients were men between the ages of 30 and 39 from New York City who reported recent sexual contact with other men. One was a sex worker, two had sex with each other, and one reported having recently traveled to Europe. All patients presented with a rash on the face, buttocks, and genitals, which were successfully treated with antifungal drugs.
The report's authors, including clinicians from Columbia University Irving Medical Center and New York University Grossman School of Medicine, found that TMVII can be spread through sexual contact and cause lesions on the genitals, buttocks, face, trunk, and skin. It states that health care providers should be aware of the following: Patients with TMVII infection should be advised about the importance of avoiding skin-to-skin contact with the affected area.
“Public health surveillance, health care provider and patient education and awareness, and increased access to dermatophyte identification and antifungal susceptibility testing may help detect, monitor, and prevent the spread of TMVII.” the researchers wrote.
