ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, OKLAHOMA —
As the influenza season reaches its peak, it's more important than ever to stay healthy and prevent the spread of disease. Taking precautions, both at home and at work, can help you avoid getting sick and protect those around you.
One of the most effective ways to prevent influenza is vaccination. Senior Airman Renee York, 97th Medical Operations Squadron immunization technician, talks about the importance of getting the flu shot.
“The flu shot helps protect against serious infections,” York says. “This virus contains a weakened version of the influenza virus so that if you encounter the virus later on, your body will be able to recognize it and build the antibodies needed to fight it.”
The influenza vaccine reduces the risk of serious illness and hospitalization, especially for young children, older adults, and people with certain health conditions.
Vaccination alone is not enough to stay healthy during flu season. Important habits to adopt include being clean, boosting your immune system, and staying home if you're sick.
Simple habits like washing your hands regularly and covering your coughs and sneezes can greatly reduce the spread of germs. Yorke emphasized the importance of hand hygiene.
“Proper hand hygiene is important because germs can be easily spread through our hands,” she said. “Germs can also be spread if someone coughs near another person. Washing your hands regularly removes these germs and reduces your chances of getting sick.”
If you are sick, it is best to avoid close contact with others to prevent the spread of the virus. Resting at home will help you recover faster and keep those around you healthy.
“You might think it's just a cold and you'll be fine,” said Sgt. Logan McEachin, 97 HCOS Allergy and Immunization Noncommissioned Officer, “But don't ignore your symptoms and end up spreading the flu throughout your office. It's best to get tested. We are testing here every day.”
If you haven't gotten your flu shot, it's not too late. Vaccinations are available at Altus Air Force Base Medical Group. Getting vaccinated now will help protect you for the rest of the season.
“We have reservations every Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.,” McEachin said. “We have shots specifically for the elderly, but also for young children.”
