A Mongolian man died of a gland plague, the state’s Department of Health said, renewing fears that the country might experience a recurrent large-scale illness.
A 42-year-old man from Hobud in western Mongolia fell ill on Tuesday night with the disease. The ministry of health said the victim, shortly before his death, purchased two dead marmots, ground squirrels, known to carry fleas that spread the disease.
Marmot hunting is illegal in Mongolia, but many consider the animal a delicacy, denying the associated health risks. So far, 12 cases confirmed by examination of gland plague have been registered in Japan. Last month, a 15-year-old boy died of this disease.
In July, Mongolia quarantined the entire area after identifying two with glandular plague symptoms. The National Center for Zoonotic Diseases reports that 17 out of 21 states in Mongolia are at risk of outbreaks.
