Canadian doctors say teenager infected with H5N1 is in 'serious condition'
A Canadian teenager hospitalized with suspected H5N1 bird flu is in critical condition, health officials said Tuesday.
The patient, believed to be Canada's first human case of H5N1, was previously healthy and had no underlying health conditions, health officials confirmed at a press conference.
The teenager first developed symptoms on November 2 and tested positive for bird flu on November 8, when he was admitted to intensive care.
Although the exact strain has not yet been identified, authorities estimate the virus to be H5N1, the strain currently circulating in dairy cows in the United States.

The Canadian patient initially developed conjunctivitis, fever and cough, all of which are consistent with the milder symptoms reported by dairy and poultry farm workers infected with the virus in the United States.
But unlike those cases, this teenager quickly developed acute respiratory distress syndrome. This is a serious lung disease that causes a lack of oxygen in the blood and can lead to death.
Health official Bonnie Henry told reporters: “This is a reminder that in young people, this virus can progress and cause very severe symptoms, and the deterioration was very rapid.'' “He gave me a lot of help,” he said.
Henry said they were being treated with “multiple drugs” after consulting with a team of doctors in the United States.
The source of infection has not yet been identified and the investigation continues.
Henry said the boy had no contact with the farm, but did have contact with dogs, cats and reptiles. One dog was sick but tested negative for H5N1.
In British Columbia, H5N1 has been detected in wild birds, poultry farms, and small wild mammals such as skunks and foxes. However, unlike the United States, Canada has not reported any cases in dairy cows and there is no evidence of avian influenza in milk samples.
More than 40 of the boy's contacts have been identified and tested, but there is no evidence they were infected with the virus. Some people are offered prophylactic Tamiflu, a prescription drug used to treat influenza.
The H5N1 virus has historically had a very high mortality rate of about 55%, but recent cases in the United States have been mild.
The World Health Organization recorded 921 confirmed cases of H5N1 influenza from 2003 to October 2024, including 464 deaths.
