Ministry of Health to provide up to 50,000 mpox tests to African health organizations
SINGAPORE – Singapore's Ministry of Health will provide up to 50,000 mpox tests to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to combat the ongoing epidemic on the continent.
In a joint statement on November 15, the Ministry of Health and Africa CDC announced that the Ministry of Health will provide an aid package consisting of diagnostic kits and testing supplies.
As of November, the outbreak had affected 19 states in the African Union, with more than 12,000 confirmed cases on the continent so far in 2024.
This increase was primarily due to outbreaks in African countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi.

He further added: “Through this contribution, we hope to help strengthen Africa CDC's effective case management capacity. By supporting other countries, we also strengthen the resilience of our own region.”
Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya thanked Singapore's Ministry of Health and said, “We hope this will pave the way for broader cooperation between African Union member states and Singapore in strengthening public health efforts.” ” he added.
Mpox first appeared in humans in 1970 and until 2022 was reported mainly in endemic Central and West Africa, MOH said on its website.
However, in 2022, mpox simultaneously emerged in several countries outside Africa, including the United States and Singapore, where the virus has historically been uncommon.
