How to deal with seasonal depression in autumn and winter
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — During this time, we may experience changes in mood and behavior.
The American Psychiatric Association reports that approximately 5% of American adults experience seasonal affective disorder.
People with SAD tend to experience mood changes in the fall and winter.
As the days get shorter and the daylight hours decrease, it not only affects our daily life but also our mood.
“We know that a lack of vitamin D can affect your mood and other functions in your body,” says Coraline Robinson of Balance Therapy Center. “It also affects melatonin, which regulates our circadian rhythm, which regulates our sleep.”
Robinson explains that the symptoms of SAD are similar to depression.
“I felt more depressed, more hopeless,” Robinson said. “You may lose interest in normal activities and sleep too much or too little.”
Robinson told Action News that SAD accounts for about 40 percent of the year. She added that people who are already living with a mental health condition are also more susceptible to SAD.
“If you already have major depressive disorder, your depression symptoms are likely to worsen during the winter months,” Robinson says.
There are steps people can take to alleviate seasonal depression.
Robinson says attending group therapy is one way SAD can be controlled. Another option is phototherapy.
“It's mimicking sunlight,” Robinson says. “This is an indoor lamp that resembles sunlight, but provides at least 30 minutes of UV protection per day.”
According to the American Psychiatric Association, SAD can develop at any age, but typically occurs between the ages of 18 and 30. Robinson says a strong family support system can help people get out of seasonal depression and back into a normal routine.
“Make sure people don't become isolated, even if they don't want to,” Robinson said.
