SARS-CoV-2 invades human cells by attaching a notorious spike to a protein called ACE2 on the cell surface. The challenge for scientists is how to prevent new COVID-19 infections and stop that process to mitigate existing infections.
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, They say they may have found a way. Inspired by antibodies naturally produced by camels such as camels, alpaca, and llamas, the team synthesized powerful nanobodies to disarm viral spikes.
“Nanobodies act like antibodies found in the human immune system, but offer many unique advantages for effective treatments against SARS-CoV-2,” said co-leader of the project. Aashish Manglik, MD Chem.

One of the great advantages of the synthetic Nanobody called Aeronab 6 is that it is so stable that it can be converted into a dry powder and aerosolized as a nasal spray or inhaler. This is what the scientists call “AeroNabs”.
They envision AeroNabs as an inexpensive over-the-counter self-administered drug that both treats and prevents COVID-19. It can also protect people who do not respond or have access to the COVID-19 vaccine.
Healthcare professionals, first responders, and prison guards can use AeroNabs as a molecular supplement to regular PPE.
While promising like UCSF’s coronavirus therapy, it faces significant hurdles:
— Researchers do not yet have a commercial partner to manufacture AeroNab, but are actively looking for a partner.
-Compounds need to be tested in animals and can take months.
-Delivery of the drug via the inhaler may cause the lungs to become completely uncovered and the virus may solidify the scaffold in unprotected areas.
But Manglik is optimistic.
“If AeroNabs prove to be as effective as our expectations, they may help reshape the course of the global pandemic,” he said.
