Man in San Diego counts positive in West Nile
Alpine (CNS)-A 61-year-old Alpine man was the first West Nile virus positive in San Diego county this year for the first time, local health officials reported Wednesday.
The man whose name was withheld was hospitalized and recovered. The California Department of Public Health confirmed his WNV diagnosis Tuesday.
According to the San Diego County Department of Health and Human Services, the man has traveled to Yuma, Arizona, where he is believed to have been infected with the virus.
Since January 1, there have been two West Nile virus-positive detections of mosquitoes during regular catch by county vector control programs. One was found in the Delmar area and the other in the Black Mountain Ranch area.
There were only three human cases of West Nile virus in San Diego county in 2019, and two in 2018.
The state reports that in 2020, 11 people have so far been infected throughout the state. This includes children in the neighboring Orange County who were diagnosed and hospitalized sometime last week but are expected to recover.
West Nile virus is primarily a disease of birds, but it can be transmitted to people by certain species of mosquitoes that first eat infected birds and animals and then bite humans.
About 80% of people infected with the West Nile virus are unaware of the virus and have no symptoms. Approximately one in five patients infected will get a fever, which causes headaches, nausea, fatigue, skin rashes, and swollen glands. Approximately one in 150 infected people can become severe and die.
People over the age of 50 with underlying illness are at increased risk.
Public health and environmental health officials have set up county’prevention, protection, and reporting’ guidelines to help residents protect themselves from mosquitoes that pass the West Nile virus and invasive Aedes aegypti, which can transmit tropical diseases such as deer and dengue. Discard or remove plant saucers, gutters, buckets, trash cans, toys, old tires, wheelbarrows, and other items that can hold water inside or outside the house.
