“Signs of hope” when the virus has peaked – Citizens
The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) says there are signs of hope that the Covid-19 pandemic has peaked in all states at the end of July.
It is based on the Ministry of Home Affairs data of death, which is registered in the national population register.
The SAMRC Disease Burden Research Unit publishes a report on weekly deaths in the country.

In a statement released Wednesday, the SAMRC said: “To calculate the “excess mortality” for a particular period, the research team looks at the number compared to the number expected to die during this period. Geographical and age patterns indicate that excess mortality is associated with Covid-19. “
It added that pandemics have different trajectories in rural areas.
Debbie Bradshaw, SAMRC’s chief expert scientist, said Western Cape, the first state to experience the spread of the community, stood out because the epidemic was much slower.

Meanwhile, SAMRC President and CEO Glenda Gray said he had asked doctors to ensure accurate death certificates, especially when it came to Covid-19.

“The declining trend in mortality is a positive sign that the virus may have peaked in some parts of the country and is in line with a pandemic epidemiological model,” Gray said.
The weekly mortality report said, “The estimated number of excess deaths is beginning to decline, consistent with the observed Covid-19 mortality trend. Decline both.”
