Health officials confirm first human case of bird flu in Arizona
Phoenix (AZ Family) – The Arizona Department of Health Services has confirmed the state's first human case of avian influenza.
State health officials confirmed Friday that two people tested positive after handling infected poultry at a plant in Pinal County. Officials said both individuals reported mild symptoms and made full recoveries.
“So far, there is no evidence that human-to-human transmission of H5 (avian influenza) is occurring. The risk to the general public from H5 remains low,” the Ministry of Health said in a news release.
Bird flu has previously been detected in Arizona, including Pinal and Maricopa counties.
Last week, samples taken from a backyard herd in Maricopa County tested positive for the virus, according to public records. Just before that, A farm in Pinal County tested positive..
The avian influenza virus, also known as H5N1 avian influenza A, was first detected in dairy cows in the United States in March.
Also on Friday, the Department of Agriculture national milk testing strategymandated virus testing of the country's milk supply. Trials are scheduled to begin Dec. 16 in six states, including California, Colorado, Michigan, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Oregon.
The virus is spreading particularly rapidly in California, where cases have been confirmed in nearly 500 of the more than 700 infected clusters in the United States.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 57 people have been infected with the virus in the United States this year, including 31 in California.
Mild symptoms have been seen in dairy and poultry farm workers who had close contact with infected animals. In two cases, missouri adults and california kid No known cause of the disease has been identified.
No cases of avian influenza have been detected in humans in the United States.
