Butler officials see whooping cough cases on the rise
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Local doctors say whooping cough cases are on the rise and are urging parents to check their children's immunization records to make sure they're up to date.
Officials say there have been nine cases of whooping cough, better known as whooping cough, in the past 12 months.
It may not seem like much, but there are usually only one or two cases a year.
“There is no greater gift this holiday season than protecting a loved one with a vaccination,” said Spencer Cooper, associate medical director of the Southern Indiana Perinatal Center.
“Whooping cough is a completely preventable disease and we just want to get the word out,” said Deaconess Pediatric Infectious Diseases Director Jules Worley.
This disease is especially threatening to babies and expectant mothers.
“It looks like a cold. You have a mild fever, a mild runny nose, and a slight cough, but as the disease progresses the cough actually gets much worse,” Dr. Worley said.
Doctors say most of the nine whooping cough patients they have seen this year have had to be hospitalized, and the disease is easily spread by coughing and sneezing.
The best protection is vaccination.
“Vaccination is the best way to prevent whooping cough,” Worley said.
Doctors encourage parents to check not only their child's immunization records, but also their own.
“We recommend that all pregnant women receive the vaccine between 27 and 36 weeks into each pregnancy,” Cooper said.
Dr. Cooper said there is 15 years of data showing the whooping cough vaccine is safe for pregnant mothers. It is also important to get vaccinated. That's because that protection applies to babies, who cannot be vaccinated until they are two months old.
They say another way to prevent the spread of infection is to make sure you and your children wash your hands regularly and cover all coughs and sneezes.
If you suspect you have pertussis, call your doctor and let them know before your visit.
Doctors also want to implement the cocoon idea. This means anyone who is likely to spend a lot of time with their baby should get vaccinated to keep their child safe.
