F&G is aware of a large number of wild bird deaths related to avian influenza
Avian influenza remains a threat to wild birds across Idaho, and Idaho Fish and Game is aware of multiple locations where wild bird deaths have been reported. Unfortunately, in most cases, the disease must go away on its own. Although Fish and Game personnel cannot respond to every case of infected wild birds, staff are actively working to pick up bird carcasses in areas with the highest numbers of dead waterfowl.
“We are aware that the public is currently reporting sick and dead wild geese in the Lake Lowell, Parma, and Fort Boise areas of the Treasure Valley, and the number of dead birds is in the thousands. We estimate that it climbs onto the feathers,” Fish said. and Stacey Dauwalter, Game's Wildlife Health Program Coordinator. “Fish and Game staff are working diligently to remove dead birds, as this is the best option to reduce the impact of avian influenza.”
Jeff Netter, Fish and Game Migratory Bird Coordinator, said such deaths are now widespread.
“Flocks of dead light geese, including blue geese, snow geese, and Ross's geese, have been found as far east as Indiana and Tennessee and as far south as Louisiana and Texas,” Netter said. “Although it is unfortunate, the fatality of thousands of great geese does not pose a population-level concern.The number of birds affected is only a small fraction of the total number of over 1 million birds. .”
Avian influenza is primarily carried by waterfowl (geese and ducks) along their migration routes from their summer habitats to wintering grounds. Southwest Idaho has become an important migratory stopover relatively recently. Over the last 15 years there has been a significant increase in the number of white geese stopping here in the fall, and the same is true for the birds returning north in the spring. More than 30,000 were counted at Lake Lowell last winter.

Live birds showing signs of disease should be left alone. The local wildlife rehabilitation center is currently not accepting wild birds. There is no treatment or vaccine for avian influenza, and the movement of sick birds can spread the disease further.
Dead birds can be disposed of in the trash to prevent other animals from coming into contact with them or eating them. The best way to handle birds is to use gloves and a mask and place them in double-bagged garbage bags. You should also always wash your hands after handling the bird.
