Studies link side effects in adults to gastrointestinal tract, heart and kidneys – The Week
Paracetamol, a widely used over-the-counter painkiller, can pose serious health risks to adults over the age of 65, especially when taken long-term. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Nottingham analyzed the health records of more than 180,000 people who had been repeatedly prescribed paracetamol and found an alarming link.
The results showed that paracetamol use was associated with a 24% increased risk of peptic ulcer bleeding and a 36% increased risk of lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Additionally, the study found that taking paracetamol could increase the risk of chronic kidney disease by 19%, heart failure by 9% and hypertension by 7%.
Researchers warn that the findings mean the use of paracetamol as a first-line painkiller for long-term conditions such as osteoarthritis in older people should be carefully considered. This concern is echoed in previous research, including a 2016 Lancet study that found paracetamol minimally reduced pain and did not improve physical function in patients with knee and hip osteoarthritis. For their analysis, researchers looked at the health records of 1,80,483 people (180,000 people) who had been repeatedly prescribed paracetamol (prescribed more than once within six months).
Their health outcomes were compared with those of 402,478 (4.02 million) people of the same age who had never been prescribed paracetamol repeatedly.
