Bird flu confirmed in Cullman and Pickens counties, killing 116,000 birds
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in specific areas, killing 116,000 birds in Cullman and Pickens Counties.
The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industry (ADAI) announced that HPAI has been confirmed on a commercial broiler farm in Cullman County and in a backyard flock in Pickens County.
Samples taken from the herd were tested at the Alabama Diagnostic Laboratory in Auburn, part of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network, and were confirmed positive.

ADAI said the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is working closely with Alabama animal health officials on a joint incident response and action plan.
State officials isolated the affected properties and reduced the population of all birds on the property to prevent the spread of the disease.
ADAI said all poultry within a 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) radius of the Cullman commercial facility is inspected and monitored.
As part of the existing avian influenza response plan, federal and state partners are working on additional surveillance and testing in areas surrounding affected bird flocks.
ADAI and USDA said they are actively monitoring the disease in commercial poultry farms, backyard flocks, live bird markets, and migratory bird populations.
Officials said HPAI is considered a low risk to human health, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but is highly contagious to other birds, including commercial and backyard poultry flocks. Said it was expensive. This virus is also not considered a food safety threat, but infected birds do not enter the food supply.

Symptoms of HPAI include:

ADAI is calling on the commercial poultry industry and backyard flock owners to strengthen biosecurity measures to protect their operations from HPAI.
Biosecurity measures include:
- Cleaning vehicles and equipment
- Limit non-essential visitors
- Disinfect your shoes with a clean footbath
- Change of clothes in case of contact with birds etc.
People should avoid contact with sick or dead poultry or wild animals. If exposed, wash hands and change clothing before coming into contact with poultry or wild birds.
