Young women with polycystic ovary syndrome are at increased risk of heart disease
According to a European Heart Association press release, PCOS is a common condition affecting an estimated 6%-20% of women of reproductive age. The condition is characterized by multiple cysts in the ovaries, an irregular menstrual cycle, excessive hair or head hair loss due to high levels of male hormones, and difficulty in pregnancy.
There are strategies for women with PCOS to stay healthy and relieve symptoms, but women in this condition are more likely to be overweight or obese, diabetic, and hypertensive. All of these symptoms are risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
The study included 60,574 women treated for pregnancy between 1994 and 2015, of which 10.2% were PCOS. The researchers used medical records to track these women for nine years, during which 4.8% developed cardiovascular disease.
Based on these findings, the researchers found that women with PCOS were 19% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than women without PCOS. But they added that women over the age of 50 were not at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease when they were divided into age groups.
Interestingly, women in their 30s and 40s with PCOS were at increased risk of cardiovascular disease compared to women without PCOS. The evidence for women under the age of 30 was less clear, according to the study authors, probably because the data set lacked women of that age to identify risk.
“Heart health appears to be a particular problem for young women with PCOS,” said study author Dr Claire Oliver Williams in a statement. “This may be because they are more likely to be obese and have higher blood pressure and diabetes compared to their peers. Previous studies have suggested that these differences decrease with age.” “As women without PCOS grow older, they become overweight and develop high blood pressure and diabetes. In a negative sense, they are catching up with their peers.”
But Oliver Williams added that simple lifestyle changes could make a difference, saying that women with PCOS should remain positive. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen with fruits and vegetables is important and helps manage the effects of PCOS. She said that taking care of mental health is also important.
