Warning of winter bugs in Cornwall and Devon
The UK Health and Safety Agency (UKHSA) has warned that a number of diseases are currently circulating in the south west.
Coronavirus, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RS virus) are among the diseases that affect people during the cold season.
Dr Rupa Joshi, deputy medical director for NHS England South West, advised people to stay warm and eat well to prevent illness.
She also advised good hygiene and staying away from loved ones if people are suffering from symptoms of the disease.
“In addition to properly heating your home, wearing multiple thin layers will keep you warmer than one thick layer,” she says.
“It is also very important to eat enough food and drink hot drinks where possible.
“Insects are prevalent in the winter, so good hand hygiene is important.
“If you think you are unwell or at risk of spreading the bug to a loved one, avoid close contact with others, especially if you are vulnerable.”
The UKHSA recommends that older people, pregnant women and people with pre-existing conditions come forward for the vaccine.
Children of school age through 11th grade in reception were also eligible for a free flu vaccination.
Professor Dominic Mellon, UKHSA South West Health Protection Area Deputy Director, added: “To stay well through the winter and stay on track with your plans, let's make time to prioritize our health by getting vaccinated.”
