First Human, Travel-Related West Nile Virus Case Reported in San Diego County in 2020

A 61-year-old man from Alpine, confirmed today by County Health and Human Services, was confirmed to be the first West Nile-positive in 2020 in San Diego County.
The man was hospitalized and tested, and the California Public Health Service confirmed the case on August 11. He recovered.
He has traveled to Yuma, Arizona and is believed to have been infected with the virus.
Since January 1, 2020, two West Nile virus positivity has been detected in mosquitoes during regular capture by the County Vector Control Program. One is the Del Mar area and the other is the Black Mountain Ranch area.
There were only three human cases of West Nile virus in San Diego county in 2019, and two in 2018.
The West Nile virus is primarily a disease of birds, but can be transmitted to people by certain species of native San Diego county mosquitoes that first eat infected birds and animals and then bite humans.
Eighty percent of people infected with the West Nile virus are unaware of the virus and do not suffer from symptoms. Approximately one in five patients infected will get a fever, which causes headaches, nausea, fatigue, skin rashes, and swollen glands. Approximately 1 in 150 people who become infected get seriously ill and may die.
The county’s public health and environmental health officials say that the best way for people to protect themselves from viruses is to follow the county’s prevention, protection, and reporting guidelines. These guidelines also help county residents not only protect themselves from mosquitoes that pass the West Nile virus, but also protect themselves from them.
