RSV and influenza cases increasing in Bowling Green area
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – Kentucky health officials are sounding the alarm as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza cases are surging among pediatric patients in the state.
of Kentucky Department of Public Health Respiratory virus activity is currently high, with health systems reporting increased levels of COVID-19, influenza, and RSV.
Dr. Chris Bryant of Norton Pediatric Infectious Diseases noted that the outbreak of RSV cases occurred later this year compared to last year. As of last week, Norton's health system had reported nearly 700 cases this month, a 33% increase from the previous week.
“We also see cases of RSV in our pediatric clinic in Bowling Green,” Dr. Bryant said.
At Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville, many children are hospitalized with respiratory illnesses, and influenza A is the most common influenza strain doctors see.
“The emergency department is very busy. The office is very busy,” Dr. Bryant said.
Many of the current respiratory viruses have similar symptoms, including difficulty breathing, discoloration of the lips and skin, dehydration, vomiting, confusion, fever, and fatigue.
“These are all alarming signs and should prompt immediate medical diagnosis,” Dr. Bryant said.
Dr. Mark Brockman, a pediatrician at Norton Children's, stressed the need for young children to get tested immediately if they show symptoms of the virus.
“The child will look distressed, and that's not subtle,” Dr. Brockman said. “That's why you should call 911 or head to the nearest emergency room.”
Bronchiolitis, a condition in which the smallest respiratory passages become inflamed and clogged with mucus, often occurs with many viral respiratory illnesses. Unlike adults, infants and toddlers have a hard time navigating these passageways effectively.
Vaccines help protect against RSV infection by giving infants antibodies that build immunity to the virus. Dr. Bryant recommends the RSV vaccine for infants younger than 8 months.
“We know these people are most at risk for severe RSV, but RSV infection certainly occurs in older infants and children,” Dr. Bryant said.
To prevent complications from respiratory illnesses, doctors recommend measures such as staying hydrated, practicing good personal hygiene, using a humidifier, using hand sanitizer, and bathing daily.
