An animal sanctuary in Shelton, Washington, has been quarantined after 20 big cats died within the past month due to an outbreak of bird flu.

The first cat, a cougar, showed signs of illness and died on Nov. 23. The virus then quickly sickened many other animals throughout the sanctuary. Although some felines shared walls between their habitats, there was no direct contact.

The sanctuary's 17 remaining animals, including cougars, bobcats, servals and tigers, remain under close observation.

In response, the sanctuary removed 8,000 pounds of food from storage and began a deep clean, a move the nonprofit claims has strained its finances. “Even with discounted rates, the increase in medical costs is significant,'' the group said, calling for donations to help cover the costs.

The outbreak comes amid growing concerns about bird flu in the United States.
