Influenza cases on Long Island are on the rise
Flu season is officially here. Doctors say influenza cases are currently surging on Long Island.
According to the state Department of Health, there were 1,234 influenza cases in the state in mid-November. By mid-December, that number had increased to 7,903.
“We started today with no appointments because it's the day after a holiday, and we had an additional 52 sick visits,” said East Meadow pediatrician Dr. John Zaso.
About a third of those cases are influenza cases, Zasso said. Pediatricians recommend getting the flu shot, which protects against three types of infections.
News 12 checked with Stony Brook Medicine and Northwell Health and they confirmed that flu cases are on the rise.
A Rockville Center pharmacist said more people are getting flu medication.
“We've definitely seen an increase over the past two weeks, and we've definitely seen a significant increase in influenza cases this month alone,” said Anthony Valenti, owner of Valenti Pharmacy.
Experts say good hygiene is the key to prevention, and early diagnosis and treatment are also important.
Doctors say fever, body aches and vomiting are symptoms of the flu. Early treatment can help prevent ear infections, pneumonia, and other complications caused by the flu.
