Holiday advice for family members living with Alzheimer's disease or dementia
Many families may notice changes in their loved ones or themselves during holiday gatherings.
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — The most wonderful time of the year can also feel like the most difficult for families fearing the development of Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia.
Many families may notice changes in their loved ones or themselves during holiday gatherings. But before assuming a diagnosis, Jenna Fink, associate director of community services for the Alzheimer's Association Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter, urges everyone to watch for the signs of dementia. The most common are memory loss and confusion during conversations, she says.
“So you may notice more confusion or problems with familiar or normal tasks. Additionally, you may notice changes in mood or behavior, such as someone becoming more irritable or not feeling stressed before. They may appear to be more stressed out than they otherwise would have been,” Fink said.
But Fink, along with other advocates, urges people worried about confusion, memory loss or other changes to first schedule a primary care appointment for themselves or a loved one. That's because common and easily treatable conditions such as drug side effects, respiratory infections, and even depression can mimic dementia.
