Rapid increase in norovirus, whooping cough, and influenza infections heralds the end of 2024
Jacksonville, Florida – Doctors are warning of an increase in diseases such as norovirus, whooping cough and seasonal influenza as 2024 draws to a close.
Health experts are warning people to be especially careful when traveling or gathering in large groups.
Norovirus infections are increasing nationwide
Norovirus, often associated with cruise ships, is surging across the United States. The state health department reported 91 outbreaks the week ending Dec. 5, compared to 69 the week before, according to CDC data.
The virus is highly contagious and causes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain, usually within 12 to 47 hours after exposure. Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States and is often mistaken for food poisoning during holiday gatherings such as Thanksgiving.
Dr. Jonathan Cantor, a fellow at the Penn Center for Clinical Epidemiology, explained the confusion.
“It's a difficult thing to deal with people. A lot of times when people feel sick after eating, they say, 'Okay, I got food poisoning,' but that's not clear to people. Since it was after Thanksgiving, did I get food poisoning because I left the turkey out too long and ate it without fully cooking it? Or could it be a viral disease like norovirus? ?'' Cantor said.
He stressed that the best treatment is rest and hydration.
Whooping cough hits 10-year high
The number of pertussis (whooping cough) cases is at its highest in a decade. The CDC reports that the number of infected people will exceed 32,000 in 2024, a six-fold increase from 2023. The surge has put renewed focus on vaccination efforts, as public trust in vaccines remains an issue in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Dr. Kanter also highlighted the broader impact the pandemic has had on vaccine hesitancy.
“One of the long-term effects of COVID-19 is a decline in trust in science and institutions, which is leading to fewer people choosing vaccines,” he said.
Influenza season and RSV increase burden on healthcare
The CDC is warning of increased respiratory disease activity across the country, with more children hospitalized with RSV and a 12% increase in influenza positivity in the final weeks of 2024. Public health officials recommend vaccination, good hygiene, and caution during social gatherings to reduce the spread of infection.
