Oregon records highest number of pertussis cases since 1950
PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) – Oregon has recorded the highest number of pertussis cases this year since 1950, according to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA).
“It's come back with a vengeance this year,” said Dr. Paul Cieslak, medical director of infectious diseases and immunization for the OHA Office of Public Health.
As of Dec. 30, OHA has registered 1,105 cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, for 2024. In 1950, there were 1,420 reported cases of pertussis.
OHA said 44 outbreaks were reported this year, most of them sporadic.

Cieslak said many people have neglected routine vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Over the last few years, we've seen pertussis vaccination rates go down. Not by a lot, but definitely down. As you probably know, we're vaccinating 100% of people. We want them to receive the same treatment,” Cieslak said.
The median age of those infected in 2024 was 12 years old, and 80% were under 18, according to epidemiologists with OHA's public health division. Approximately half of those infected had already been vaccinated against whooping cough.
Cieslak said infants are at the highest risk for whooping cough because they are too young to receive the vaccine and have not had a chance to build immunity.
“Their airways are very narrow. If you stress the airways, if you clog them with mucus, if you cough so hard that you need to breathe faster, that's going to be a bigger problem in infants.” Cieslak said.
In addition to infants, pregnant women are also strongly recommended to be vaccinated against pertussis.
“Pregnant women should be vaccinated with each pregnancy. They make antibodies and pass them across the placenta to the baby, so the baby is protected from the moment of birth. Too young to be vaccinated. “Humans can be protected if their mothers are vaccinated during pregnancy,” Cieslak said.
OHA recommends pertussis vaccine for all ages.
