Two children die from influenza in Oregon as infections surge
State health officials did not release any further information about the deaths. They said that although the season is mild, severe forms of the virus are circulating.

“The season isn't over yet. In fact, it might not be even halfway through,” said Dr. Paul Cieslak, medical director of infectious diseases and immunization for the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Division of Public Health. He added that this may be the peak of the season.
The state reported two child deaths during the week of Dec. 22-28, further highlighting the impact of the flu.
“Out of respect for my family and to ensure their privacy, I will not reveal where my family lives,” Cieslak said. “The only information we are releasing is that there are deaths.”
While flu season is always a concern, Cieslak emphasized that each season brings its own challenges.
“Every season is a bad flu season,” he noted. “Almost every season, even during a typical flu year, we see hospitals filling up and overflowing with patients, and this year is no different.”
There have been 474 hospitalizations in the Portland metro area alone, which Cieslak said is “in the moderate range for flu season compared to other seasons.” .
This season, the predominant strain of influenza is influenza A, with the H3N2 variant being the main culprit.
“Influenza A tends to be more severe,” Cieslak said. “In year B, hospitalizations tend to be lower.”
The low hospitalization rate during the influenza B season is thought to be due to the fact that the virus tends to mutate less frequently than influenza A.
Although the flu season is still 10 to 12 weeks away, Cieslak urged people who haven't yet been vaccinated to get vaccinated. Current data suggest that the influenza vaccine remains an effective means of protection, even in years when influenza A is prevalent.
“This is still probably a 75% match, which is not bad,” Czeslak said, referring to the match between the vaccine and the circulating strain. He added: “We're probably going to be better off with the vaccine than we would be without the vaccine.”
However, Oregon's vaccination rate remains below last year's numbers. Approximately 26% of Oregonians have received a flu shot so far, a 4% decrease from last year, according to OHA's vaccination registry.
As influenza season continues, health officials are emphasizing the importance of vaccination and prevention to reduce the impact on hospitals and communities.
