USC scientists reveal likely sequence of COVID-19 symptoms
Los Angeles (CNS)-USC researchers have discovered an order in which COVID-19 symptoms are likely to first appear. Fever, cough, muscle aches, followed by nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea were announced Thursday.
According to scientists at the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience, knowing the order of symptoms of COVID-19 can help patients decide to seek treatment promptly or to self-isolate without delay. This information can also help doctors rule out other illnesses, plan how to treat patients, and intervene early in the illness.
The study, published in Frontiers in Public Health, was led by PhD candidate Joseph Larsen and the scientists Peter Kuhn and James Hicks of the Institute for Convergence Sciences at the USC Michelson Center.
Cohn, a professor of medicine, biomedical engineering, aerospace and mechanical engineering at USC, said: “Physicians can decide what steps to take to care for a patient and prevent the patient’s condition from deteriorating.”

To determine the timeline of COVID symptoms, the authors analyzed more than 55,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in China collected by the World Health Organization from February 16 to February 24. We also investigated a dataset of approximately 1,100 cases collected by the Chinese Medical Treatment Expert Group through the National Medical Commission of China from December 11th to January 29th.
In addition, to compare the order of COVID-19 symptoms to influenza, the researchers investigated data from 2,470 cases reported to health authorities in North America, Europe, and the Southern Hemisphere from 1994 to 1998.
“The order of symptoms is important,” Larsen said. “Knowing that each disease progresses differently means that doctors can more quickly identify if they are likely to have COVID-19 or another disease.
