'Don't compare HMPV with Covid': AIIMS Delhi professor as 4 cases of HMPV detected in India
Amid concerns over the emergence of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in India, medical experts remain calm, stressing that the virus is neither new nor comparable to Covid-19. I'm looking for something. “Illnesses like influenza, respiratory illnesses, typically 1% of illnesses are due to this HMPV virus. This is very normal and there have been no deaths from this. People get infected and are not affected. It is the same HMPV that was detected in Bangalore and there has been no surge in cases or any serious situation anywhere in the country,” he said.
One case has been reported in Gujarat, where health officials also echoed similar sentiments. Dr Rakesh Joshi, director of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, stressed the need for precautionary measures rather than panic. “This virus is not new. It has been around for many years. Cases are especially seen in the winter. There is no vaccine or specific medicine for this viral infection, and treatment is based on symptoms. . If you keep everything up, you'll recover in 5-7 days. ”
Dr Joshi also urged people to isolate themselves if they have symptoms such as fever, cold or cough, and recommended wearing masks if necessary.
What is HMPV?
HMPV, first discovered in 2001, is a respiratory virus belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family and closely related to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It is spread by respiratory droplets, direct contact with an infected person, or touching contaminated surfaces. People of all ages can be affected, but people with weak immune systems, especially children and the elderly, are more vulnerable.
HMPV has recently gained global attention following an outbreak in China, leading to comparisons to the Covid-19 pandemic, which also originated in China. However, Indian health officials stress that the situation is quite different. Minister Gundurao clarified that “what they are talking about in China… has nothing to do with what we are talking about at this point.”
Indian health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, but there are currently no signs of a spike in infections or a serious outbreak. Experts advise basic hygiene practices such as frequent hand washing and avoiding crowded places if you have symptoms as effective preventive measures.
