Virus cases increase in the US as peak season approaches. What you need to know here
(WXYZ) — The winter virus is spreading rapidly and many people are seeking treatment for respiratory illnesses.
Emergency room visits are particularly high across the United States and continue to increase.
The respiratory season is getting tougher. Many of my patients suffer from these respiratory illnesses. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, influenza activity is high in most regions of the country, and the rate of positive influenza tests has risen to 18.7% nationwide.
In the last week of December, the Institute of Public Health reported 1,254 influenza cases. Only 20 people had influenza B. The rest were all influenza A.
This season's flu activity is similar to the pre-COVID-19 season of 2019-2020, when cases peaked around the new year. The CDC estimates that at least 5.3 million people have been infected with the flu, with 63,000 hospitalizations and 2,700 deaths.
Currently, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older receive the influenza vaccine annually. If you haven't got it yet, consider the following: Last year, influenza led to 470,000 hospitalizations and 28,000 deaths.

At this time, a triple-demic event like the one in 2022 during the public health emergency is not expected this year. While respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza cases are significantly increasing in many regions, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) activity is beginning to accelerate.
Currently, the rate of positive RSV tests has increased to 12.8%. Unfortunately, children are the most common emergency department visits and hospitalizations. Hospitalizations of elderly people are also increasing in some regions.
Regarding COVID-19 activity, the test positivity rate has increased to 7.1% and is expected to continue to rise. CDC wastewater data shows that wastewater is increasing in most regions of the country. That means hospitalizations and deaths may continue.
However, there is some good news. CDC modeling released over the holidays suggests this winter's wave of coronavirus infections won't be as severe as previous winter surges. Part of the reason is that so far no new “immune evasion variants” have been identified.
The CDC estimates that most current infections are caused by XEC variants, which are closely related to earlier strains. Additionally, the first data on this season's latest COVID-19 vaccines look promising. Experts believe the 2024-2025 vaccine will be effective against the currently circulating variants.
