Japanese encephalitis virus detected in Molly mosquito samples – advice for healthcare providers
Detection of Japanese Encephalitis Virus in New England
On January 7, 2025, the Hunter New England Regional Health Authority and the New South Wales Department of Health announced that routine vector disease surveillance activities within the New South Wales Arbovirus Surveillance and Mosquito Surveillance Program resulted in a reported that the flavivirus Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was detected.
This finding highlights the increased risk of arboviruses for people living, working or traveling to the Moree region.
There are no reports of Japanese encephalitis virus infection in humans.
NSW Health will continue to monitor vector populations and arbovirus activity to detect spread into the HNECC catchment area and further regions of NSW.

At-risk groups and vaccine eligibility criteria
In New South Wales, Japanese encephalitis virus vaccination is available free of charge to the following people aged two months or older who live or regularly work in high-risk local government areas:
- regularly spend time outdoors and are at risk of mosquito bites, or
- are experiencing homelessness, or
- live in an environment with limited mosquito protection (such as a tent, caravan, or sheltered dwelling); or
- We are engaged in outdoor flood recovery (cleanup) activities, including repeatedly dispatching experts and volunteers.
This also includes the following occupational risk settings:
- People who work in high-risk areas or engage in outdoor activities (camping, fishing, hiking, gardening, etc.).
- Anyone who works in, lives near, or visits pig farms, slaughterhouses, or pork processing plants (when infected with mosquitoes, pigs can transmit high levels of the virus, and even more when bitten) mosquitoes)
- People exposed to JEV through work with mosquitoes or work in diagnostic laboratories or laboratories where they come into contact with JEV cultures.

Cost considerations and equity of access
The Japanese encephalitis vaccine provided through state vaccination centers is free, but patients may be charged administration and consultation fees by some health care providers. NSW Health emphasizes the importance of reasonable fees to ensure equitable access for eligible individuals.
How to avoid mosquito bites
Japanese encephalitis virus is transmitted by the bite of an infected Culex mosquito.
The New South Wales Department of Health is advising the public to continue to take precautions and remain vigilant to avoid mosquito bites.
