A new study reveals the health risks of living near an airport.

Researchers discovered people living nearby airport – and being exposed to the noise of planes taking off and landing – may be at higher risk for poor heart health.

Research shows that exposure to noise may increase your chances of having a heart attack.

The research team said this could lead to heart attacks, life-threatening arrhythmias and strokes.

The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, looked at heart imaging data from 3,635 people living nearby. heathrow airport, gatwickBirmingham or Manchester Airport.

The hearts of people living in areas with high levels of aircraft noise were compared to those of people living in areas with low levels of aircraft noise.

People living in noisy areas had stiffer, thicker heart muscles that contracted and expanded less efficiently and were less efficient at pumping blood around the body.

This is especially true for people who are exposed to loud aircraft noise at night, and the researchers believe that sleep disturbances and people being more likely to be at home at night and therefore being exposed to noise may be to blame. That's what I think.

A separate analysis of people not exposed to aircraft noise found that this type of heart abnormality can increase the risk of events such as: heart attackLife-threatening heart rhythms and strokes occur when compared to people without these heart abnormalities.

Dr Gabby Capture, lead author from the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science and consultant cardiologist at the Royal Free Hospital in London, said: function.

“However, our findings add to the growing body of evidence that aircraft noise can negatively impact heart health and our overall health.

“Reducing exposure to aircraft noise and the health impacts for the millions of people who live near airports and under flight paths requires a concerted effort from government and industry.”

Previous studies have linked exposure to high levels of aircraft noise to high blood pressure and obesity.

Previous research led by the University of Leicester estimated that around 5% of UK adults are exposed to aircraft noise of more than 50 decibels day and night.

The study was funded by the Medical Research Council, the British Heart and Vascular Society, the British Heart Foundation, the UCL Charlotte and Yule Bogue Research Fellowship and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

Professor James Leiper, Associate Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation, said: “For most of us, flying is seen as a ticket to well-deserved rest and relaxation.

“However, this ground-breaking research reveals the potential invisible impacts on people living near our biggest travel hubs.

“Although observational studies like this cannot prove cause and effect, these findings add to previous research showing that noise pollution negatively impacts heart health.

“Further research will be needed to investigate the long-term effects of aircraft noise on the health of those most exposed.”
