Minister Muir calls for vigilance following outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Germany

Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Andrew Muir has urged livestock owners in Northern Ireland to remain vigilant following the recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in Germany.
Minister Muir said: “The outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Germany is of serious concern not only to livestock owners, but also to the entire agricultural sector in the UK, Republic of Ireland and the EU. It is therefore important that proactive steps are taken to protect livestock. is” . ”
Foot-and-mouth disease is a severe, highly contagious viral disease that affects cattle, sheep, pigs, and other artiodactyls. Affected countries experience very significant economic losses as a result of production losses of affected animals and loss of access to international markets for animals, meat, and milk. The last case of foot and mouth disease in Northern Ireland was in 2001.
Strict controls are in place prohibiting the import of animals and animal products from countries affected by FMD. The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is closely monitoring the situation and can confirm that no susceptible species will be transferred from Germany to Northern Ireland from 1 December 2024.
The minister said he stressed the importance of biosecurity measures and responsible sourcing and encouraged livestock owners to implement best practices to protect their livestock.: “I cannot stress enough the importance of responsible sourcing to protect livestock from the introduction of disease.Furthermore, I would like to remind all farmers of the need for high levels of biosecurity. I am reminding them to remain vigilant and report any unusual symptoms to their veterinarian or my department immediately.”

Foot-and-mouth disease is not considered a public health threat. The Food Standards Agency advises that products of animal origin are safe to consume.
