January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Know what you need to know to prevent it
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and St. Dominic's Hospital's Dr. Christy Haygood shares more about cervical cancer and the best ways to not only treat and detect it, but also prevent it. We continue to carry out educational activities.
“You can treat it with a hysterectomy, you can treat it with radiation therapy, you can treat it with chemotherapy, but those are all big interventions and things that really impact your quality of life. So what we want “The big part of preventing cervical cancer is making sure all women know that they can get vaccinated and then get screened,” said Dr. Haygood, a gynecologic oncologist.
Cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. This is a common virus that is spread primarily through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity.
In most cases, HPV goes away on its own, but when it doesn't, it can cause certain cancers in women and men.
However, it can be prevented with a vaccine available to everyone between the ages of 9 and 45.
“What I want to point out about the HPV vaccine is that the most virulent tumor version, which causes 97% of cervical cancers here in the United States, is completely preventable by the vaccine. The fact that there is a vaccine available is amazing and incredible. And if everyone can make their own decisions and get the vaccine to prevent cancer, then yes. '' said Dr. Haygood.
Another preventive measure is as simple as diet, eating whole foods instead of processed foods.
Although it is recommended that women have their first PAP test screening at age 21, HPV testing is not recommended for screening women until age 30.
