Relationship between alcohol and cancer risk
MILWAUKEE — Many doctors in Wisconsin and across the country say it's time for the federal government to emphasize the strong link between alcohol consumption and cancer risk.
The United States Surgeon General Scientific evidence outlined The link between alcohol and 7 types of cancer. Some doctors even argue that all alcoholic beverages should have cancer warning labels.
The seven types of cancer directly related to alcohol consumption are mouth cancer, throat cancer, esophageal cancer, laryngeal cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, and liver cancer.
Dr. Veronica Roy is the medical director of the Liver Transplant Program at Frottart and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
“The relative risk of developing the problem increases with each amount of drink consumed per week,” Roy said. “The more you drink, the greater the risk.”
According to the World Health Organization, when alcohol is broken down in the body, May damage DNA and proteins. It can also change hormone levels and make it easier for your body to absorb other carcinogens, such as cigarette smoke.
“The breakdown products of alcohol cause oxidative stress, and we all know that excess oxidative stress in the body is associated with all kinds of health problems, including malignant tumors,” says Roy. he said.
Roy said raising awareness is important, but prevention is an uphill battle.
Alcohol remains a strong part of culture and socialization, especially in Wisconsin, said Maureen Busalacci, director of alcohol policy, prevention and research at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
“Our binge drinking remains well above the national average and this is the most common way people misuse alcohol,” Busalacci said. “This is the most common method of injury and can even lead to a state of illness even in the absence of alcohol use disorder.”
The goal now is to spread the Surgeon General's warning, emphasize its seriousness and urge state and federal leaders to take action on the problem.
“I think there's clearly a need for education and awareness that we as a community, especially as a medical community, should provide to our patients,” Roy said. “I'm not ready to comment on whether there are labels or not, but the importance of awareness is clear.”
