WHO warns of possible Marburg disease outbreak in Tanzania's Kagera region
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a suspected new outbreak of the Ebola-like Marburg virus in northwestern Tanzania, saying at least eight people have already died from the disease.
On Tuesday, WHO announced that nine suspected cases of Marburg disease have been reported in the Kagera region in the past five days.
“As disease surveillance improves, we expect more cases to rise in the coming days,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on the X program.
This highly contagious disease is similar to Ebola, with symptoms including fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, vomiting, and in some cases death due to extreme blood loss.
In Tanzania, the first Marburg disease outbreak occurred in Bukoba district in March 2023. About six people died and it lasted about two months.
Tanzanian authorities have not yet confirmed the latest outbreak.
WHO reported that patients, including health workers, have been identified and are being monitored.
It added that the country's rapid response teams have been deployed to identify suspected cases and contain the outbreak.
The WHO warned that the risk of virus spread in the region remains “high” as Kagera is a transit hub with high cross-border movement to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda.
“We do not recommend any travel or trade restrictions with Tanzania at this time,” Dr Tedros told X.
The WHO said the global risk of the infection spreading is “low” and said there is no concern at this stage that the infection will spread internationally.
Neighboring Rwanda declared the outbreak over in December after 66 people were infected and 15 died from the virus.
On average, Marburg virus kills half of those infectedaccording to WHO.
The first Marburg virus outbreak occurred in Tanzania's Bukoba district in March 2023, killing about six people and lasting nearly two months.
Marburg virus is transmitted from fruit bats to humans through contact with the body fluids of an infected person.
There is no specific treatment or vaccine for this virus, but clinical trials are underway.
