Avian influenza detected in New London County family's flock of pet birds
Highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as H5N1 or avian influenza, was confirmed Friday in a flock of backyard birds in New London County, prompting new warnings about biosecurity and vigilance, according to the state Department of Agriculture and Public Health. .
The backyard flock consisted of chickens, ducks, and peacocks, which were family pets rather than commercial poultry, and had close contact with wild waterfowl in a nearby pond. State officials confirmed the incident occurred in New London County, but declined to comment on further details. A request to only ask for the location of family homes by town was denied.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus primarily spreads among birds and dairy cows. However, according to a report from the CDC; Since January 1, 2024, 67 cases of infection have been reported nationwide.. There was one death, but the remaining cases had mild symptoms and the victims were primarily farm workers or individuals who had direct contact with sick poultry, according to the CDC.
The Connecticut incident occurred just weeks after the first death from bird flu in the United States. Reported in Louisiana. The person who died was over 65 years old, had underlying health conditions, and had reportedly been exposed to sick birds in a backyard flock. The CDC confirmed that the virus mutated in the patient's body, causing severe symptoms.
Although the details of the fatal incident in Louisiana demonstrate the serious nature of the H5N1 virus, public health experts continue to stress that the current risk to the general public remains low. Health officials have not yet reported evidence of human-to-human transmission.
According to public health officials, the best way to protect yourself is to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and animals. People who work with birds, poultry, or cattle, or who are recreationally exposed to them, are at increased risk and should take special precautions. Important measures include keeping wild birds and rodents away from coops, avoiding contact between domestic birds and wild waterfowl, washing hands and disinfecting boots before and after handling poultry, and preventing traffic around areas where poultry is kept. This includes reducing the amount.
The Department of Agriculture also advises the public to only purchase birds from trusted and reputable sellers.
Signs of H5N1 infection in a flock include a sudden increase in bird mortality, sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge, watery or green diarrhea, lack of energy, loss of appetite, decreased egg production, and areas around the eyes, neck, or head. Swelling and purplish discoloration of the wattles, combs, and legs.
State Department of Public Health Secretary Dr. Manisha Jutani reiterated that properly cooking poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165°F will kill the virus.
“The current risk for Connecticut residents of contracting H5N1 remains low,” she said. “However, we must remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions.”
Avian influenza can cause a wide range of symptoms in humans, ranging from mild or no symptoms to more severe symptoms. According to the CDCMost human cases cause mild symptoms. These include red or irritated eyes, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, and fatigue. In more moderate to severe cases, symptoms can include high fever, difficulty breathing, altered mental status, seizures, and death.
If you have been exposed to sick or dead birds or work on a farm where avian influenza has been detected, it is important to monitor for respiratory symptoms and conjunctivitis. If symptoms develop within 10 days of exposure, contact your health care provider and tell them about the exposure to the sick animal.
Residents are encouraged to report sick or dead birds to the state by calling 860-713-2505 or emailing [email protected].
