Family fund supports brain tumor research
emily hawthorneThe family of a man who died of an incurable brain tumor just four months after the birth of his child have seen the benefits of a fundraiser.
Mike Hawthorn, from Ashford, Surrey, was diagnosed with grade 2 meningioma at the age of 26 after a routine vision test.
Hawthorne underwent surgery in 2021, but died in July of the following year at the age of 33.
After friends ran the London Marathon and raised £13,700, his wife Emily was invited to join the Brain Tumor Research Center of Excellence, where scientists will use the money to improve the diagnosis and treatment of high-grade gliomas. We observed how they are supporting the project.
His mother Steph, sister Emily and friend Alex Roberts also attended the scene at Imperial College London.

“Mike was always the life of the party. He was funny and witty and the comedian of the group. He was also kind and everyone loved Mike. It couldn't be helped.”

His wife Emily said the family “felt complete” after the birth of their child.
“It was Mike's dream to have a baby. He was overjoyed. But by the time Edison was four months old, he had lost his father and I had lost my husband.” she said.
She added: “Although it is too late for Mike, we hope that the money raised in his memory will be life-changing and bring us closer to finding a cure and ensuring that his family never has to go through the same thing.” he added.
