Bats test positive for rabies in northern Michigan County
Traverse City, MI-For the first time since 2017, bats tested positive for rabies in Grand Traverse County.
The bat was received on August 7 and tested at a laboratory in Michigan. The county health department said it received the results earlier this week.
County officials have called on pet owners to check vaccination records for animals to see if they have the latest shots that include rabies. Recent homestay orders associated with a pandemic mean that some animals are late for vaccination that can protect them from diseases like rabies.
Dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, and other livestock can all be rabies, according to the Department of Health.
To minimize exposure, vaccinate your surrounding pets and watch out for strange-behaving animals and wildlife. This includes:
- Bats active during the day
- Animals drooling or bubbling in their mouth
- Aggressive behavior
