ACS annual report shows cancer incidence is rising in some populations

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has released its 2025 annual report, “Cancer Statistics,” most notably showing that the prevalence of many types of cancer is increasing, especially among women and young adults. ACS said this indicates a change in the burden of the disease.¹

The report's findings show that cancer mortality rates in the United States decreased by 34% from 1991 to 2022, with approximately 4.5 million deaths averted. The ACS projects that in 2025, there will be an estimated 2,041,910 new cancer diagnoses and 618,120 cancer deaths in the United States.¹ Advances in cancer treatment are essential because cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of death for people under age 85.²

“It is certainly great news that cancer mortality rates continue to decline due to reduced smoking, improved treatments, and early detection. Increase in morbidity among middle-aged women and the burden of cancer shifting from men to women “Moving to gender, we are constrained by a reminder of the early 1900s, when cancer was more common in women,” said L. Increased incidence of certain cancers

The report details that the incidence of some common cancers is rising. The incidence of breast cancer, prostate cancer, melanoma, endometrial cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colorectal cancer (cancers under the age of 65) is increasing.² Prostate cancer recorded the steepest increase of 3% per year from 2014 to 2021.¹ In addition, new diagnoses of colorectal cancer are increasing among men and women under 65 years of age, and cervical cancer among women between 30 and 44 years of age.

Overall cancer incidence has generally declined in men but increased in women, so that the incidence rate ratio (RR) for men and women is 1.6 (95% CI, 1.57-1.61) to 1.1 (95%). CI, 1.12-1.12) 2021.² Notably, the incidence rate for women aged 50 to 64 years (832.5 per 100,000) exceeds that for men (830.6 per 100,000). Additionally, the incidence rate is 82% higher in women under 50 (141.1 per 100,000) than in men (77.4 per 100,000), up from 51% reported in 2022.

Furthermore, in 2021, the lung cancer incidence rate for women under 65 years old (15.7 per 100,000 people) exceeded that for men (15.4 per 100,000 people) (RR, 0.98; P = .03). Pancreatic cancer morbidity and mortality rates are increasing as well, according to the report.¹

The findings also showed that from 2018 to 2019 and 2021 in the United States, the odds of developing invasive cancer at any site from birth to age 49 were 3.4 for men and 5.9 for women. .³ However, the proportion of men was higher than women in other age groups: 50–64 years (11.3, 10.8, respectively), 65–84 years (31.3, 24.2), 85 years and older (18.7, 14.1), and birth to death. (39.9); 39.0).

Significant disparities remain in cancer mortality rates

The report highlighted that black people are twice as likely to die from prostate, stomach and endometrial cancer compared to white people. You are also 50% more likely to die from cervical cancer.²

Additionally, cancer death rates from kidney, liver, stomach, and cervical cancers are two to three times higher for Native Americans than for whites.¹ Additionally, Native Americans have the highest cancer mortality rates. Among all locations, the following death rates per 100,000 population from 2018 to 2022 were: All races and ethnicities (146.0), White (151.3), Black (168.6), and American Indian/Alaskan. Native American (178.1), Asian American/Pacific Islander (93.0), and Hispanic/Latino (106.8) populations.²

The report states, “Despite the overall decline in cancer mortality rates, mortality rates for oral cavity, pancreatic, endometrial, and liver cancers (in women) are increasing. ” he added.

“This report highlights the need for increased investment in both cancer treatment and care, including equitable screening programs, especially for underserved patients and survivors. They are a critical component of discovery, and expanding access to these services will save countless lives,” said Wayne AI Frederick, MD, interim chief executive officer of ACS and the ACS Cancer Action Network. , MBA said in a news release.¹ “We must also address changes in cancer incidence, primarily among women. To assess where and why mortality rates are rising, health care providers, Collaborative efforts between policy makers and local communities need to be prioritized.”

Data for the report was collected from the Central Cancer Registry through 2021, and mortality data was collected from the National Center for Health Statistics until 2022.² Because the most recent year for which incidence and mortality data are available lags this year by approximately 2 to 3 years, ACS used two-stage statistical modeling to estimate the contemporary cancer burden. This is because it takes time to collect, compile, quality control, and distribute data.
