Two cases of measles confirmed in Snohomish County after exposure at SEA Airport
Health officials say people who became infected during exposure at the airport likely started showing symptoms between January 17 and January 31.
SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. — Two measles cases have been confirmed in Snohomish County following a measles exposure at SEA Airport earlier this month.
According to the Snohomish County Health Department, a person infected with measles traveled through the airport on January 10th.
“Anyone who was at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport between 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on January 10th may have been exposed to measles. '', at customs arrival and baggage claim,'' the ministry said in a release on Tuesday.
Health officials say people who were infected at the time likely started showing symptoms between January 17 and January 31.
Snohomish County has not yet said whether these two new cases are connected to the airport outbreak.
What are the symptoms of measles?
According to the Snohomish County Health Department, measles is airborne and highly contagious. Measles has a characteristic rash. It is red and flat and first appears on the face.
Other early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and watery eyes, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Two to three days after symptoms begin, small white spots may appear inside the mouth before a distinct rash forms.
“Measles is highly contagious and in severe cases can cause high fever, pneumonia, and in rare cases, brain swelling and death,” said Dr. James Lewis, Snohomish County Health Officer. In December, measles was reported in 30 states, including Washington, and 80% of the cases were among people without known vaccination. ”
The Snohomish County Health Department says the groups most likely to experience severe symptoms include children under 5, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems or underlying chronic health conditions.
