Cat in New Orleans home infected with bird flu, officials say | Medical/Hospital
First case of bird flu confirmed in New Orleans last week after H5N1 virus Detected in domestic cat on January 14thaccording to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Agriculture Department listed the incident among other cases in which the virus has occurred in mammals since May 2022. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the state Department of Health did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the incident.
An Oregon home's cat died last month after eating cat food containing raw turkey. Cat food containing a variant of bird flu, consistent with the disease affecting cats, was later recalled. Officials have not shared what may have affected the Orleans Parish cat or the animal's current condition.
Cooking meat and pasteurizing milk eliminates the virus, prompting veterinarians to warn against consuming raw milk and meat products. Veterinarians also warn cats against wandering outdoors, as they are natural hunters who tend to chase birds that may contain viruses.
USDA officials said cases of such viruses rarely spread, except in cases of cats living together in homes.

As of earlier this month, at least 66 people in the United States have been confirmed to have H5N1 avian influenza in 2024 and 2025. It accounts for about 60% of cases.
The city health department forwarded all inquiries to the Louisiana Department of Health.
