Restless leg syndrome still causes discomfort for many people
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – According to UVA Health, millions of Americans suffer from “restless legs syndrome.”
This condition can make it difficult to manage daily life.
“Over the last 20 to 30 years, there have been incremental advances in the mechanisms of how restless legs progress,” said UVA neurologist Dr. Elias Kalom.
The cause of restless legs syndrome remains unknown. However, symptoms can interfere with daily life.
“That sensory cord can become painful and painful, but when it stops, it comes back and can repeat throughout the night,” Dr. Karoom said.
Studies have shown that people of Northern European descent are more susceptible to this neurological disorder, Karoum says.
“This is actually a multifactorial, multigenetic disease,” Karoom says. “The spinal cord acts as a relay.”
There are several treatments available to help people survive, including sleep drip treatments and blood thinners.
But for now, researchers have found a way to help people.
“There is no cure. There are four main treatments,” Cullom says.
According to the RLS Foundation, UVA was recently designated a Center of Excellence for Restless Leg Syndrome.
