New fundraiser to fight rising cancer rates among firefighters

Eagan, Minn. – January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar reintroduced “Honoring Our Fallen Heroes.”
The partisan legislation honors St. Paul firefighter Michael Payer, who died of leukemia in 2020 while still working. His wife had to fight for Duty's interests.
Sen. Klobuchar says this bill guarantees federal assistance to families who die or are disabled from service-connected cancer.

“Firefighters took pride in having fire helmets that were charred and blackened, and they had dirty gear to show they had been in a tough environment,” said Egan Fire Chief. Hugo Searle said. “Now we know how dangerous it is and we want to have clean gear, so we've done a complete 180 with the fire department.”
Chief Searle said his department responds to about 7,000 calls for service each year, many of which expose firefighters to toxic chemicals that contaminate their gear. Forever Chemicals, known as PFAS, are also used in firefighter ballots and pose another threat.
“We want to have clean helmets, we want to have clean gear out, and we need to effectively decontaminate everything,” Chief Searle said.
They turned to Emergency Technical Decon (ETD), an Egan company they first introduced four years ago. Creating a first-of-its-kind technology using liquefied carbon dioxide to remove nearly 100% of toxins compared to 15% in the department's regular grade washing machines is recognized nationwide.
The Eagan Fire Department was ETD's first client.
It has now grown to hundreds of fire stations in the United States and seven locations in Europe.
But the science behind the problem is still emerging and catching up, making change slow and expensive.
“Construction materials, the way buildings are constructed, the way we provide plastic products to buildings has changed the way buildings burn, which has changed the types of pollutants we are exposed to,” Chief Searle said. Ta. “Firefighters are now catching up and learning about the additional hazards we face as firefighters, and we're adapting to that.”
Some departments, like Eagan, try to remove gear after every hazardous exposure, but it costs about $300 to clean a complete set of gear.
