North Carolina sees an increase in flu and tuberculosis cases
Wilmington, N.C. (WECT) – Thousands of North Carolina people get sick with the flu. However, new diseases are on the rise.
In the US, the number of people who have been sick with tuberculosis has been increasing in recent years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of people with tuberculosis is 15.6% from 2022 to 2023.
In 2024, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported 250 cases of tuberculosis, the highest number reported since 2010.
Zach Moore, a state epidemiologist with the NCDHHS, says it's difficult to pinpoint the exact reason for the increase. However, he suggests that if people have fewer options for tuberculosis tests or treatment, it could possibly go back to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“TB requires a lot of effort and attention from the local health department. In terms of finding people with tuberculosis and if they found someone with tuberculosis, everything they might have been exposed. If we test someone,” Moore said.
If someone tests positive for tuberculosis, they will be reported to the health department. Moore says tuberculosis easily spreads air, cough and sneezing. Once a positive test is reported, the health department will test everyone close to that person with a positive test.
Moore says that when a person is exposed, they can have bacteria that cause tuberculosis, even if the current symptoms are not present.
“There's a big problem with drug-resistant tuberculosis, so we need to get specimens and make sure people follow the correct treatment.”
According to the CDC, doctors' visits for illnesses like the flu have reached 15 years' high. Similarly, North Carolina is experiencing an increase in flu cases. NCDHHS reported that 3,960 people tested positive for the flu on January 25th, and that by February 1st the number had risen to 5,398. Most of these positive tests are related to type A flu.
More than 300 people died from the flu during North Carolina's last flu season, Moore said. Sixteen of those deaths were children. During this flu season, 117 people died, and none of the deaths were children.
“People don't think of it as a potentially fatal infection. For most people, it's not. But especially for people who have certain risk factors, they're over 65 years old. , young children are more likely to suffer from serious illnesses and even deaths from the flu, while people with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease and lung conditions, are at higher risk. Moore said, “The flu is very serious, It can cause tens of thousands of hospitalizations each year, and deaths each year. That's why we encourage everyone to take action to protect themselves.”
Moore says it's not too late for people to take the flu vaccine. When compared to tuberculosis, a person is more likely to get sick with influenza, RSV, or Covid-19.
