ADPH highlights the importance of measles vaccinations for children
Birmingham, Alabama (WBRC) – Alabama Department of Public Health teeth Remind people to make sure your child is up to date with measles vaccinations.
This comes after the rise in cases of highly contagious diseases in several states, including Texas and Georgia, during the first two months of 2025.
If exposed to measles, people who are not vaccinated are 90% likely to get infected. Infected people can spread the disease for up to three weeks.
Measles is a serious viral respiratory disease. When people breathe or come into contact with a liquid infected with the virus, they can allow droplets to pass through the air when someone is having measles or coughing. Symptoms usually appear after 2 weeks.
“One of the main messages we want to highlight is that measles first follows the pattern of fever, cough, runny nose, watery/red eyes. Then the rash occurs. At ADPH's Chief Medical Officer One Dr. Karen Landers said:
Antiviral drugs to treat measles are not available. To manage symptoms, parents need to make sure their child has plenty of fluids and rest. Non-aspirin heat drugs such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be given. In some cases, measles can lead to other problems such as ear infections, pneumonia, and encephalitis.
For most children, protection from measles comes from the measles-Mumpsulverra vaccine, known as the MMR vaccine. Usually given to children between the ages of 4 and 6, between 12 and 15 months.
Vaccines are available in the pediatrician's office or the county health department.
The health department says the risk of MMR vaccines causing serious harm and death is very low. They say getting a vaccine is much safer than getting measles.
Parents are asked to call a doctor immediately if the child believes that he has measles or if the child is around someone who has measles.
