Black cancer patients still have higher mortality rates than whites
(Healthday News) – Cancer mortality rates are declining among black Americans, but according to a study published online, they still have an increased mortality rate compared to white Americans. CA: Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
Anatu H. saka, and colleagues of the American Cancer Society of Atlanta, provide the latest data on cancer incidence (until 2021), mortality (until 2022), survival, screening, and risk factors, on a population-based basis. Data were used and edited using population-based data. National Cancer Institute for Black People in the United States and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Researchers point out that in 2025 there were around 248,470 new cancer cases and 73,240 cancer deaths among black people in the United States. From 1991 to 2022, black men experienced a relative decrease (49%) in overall cancer mortality (49%). – Ages, ages 40 to 59, have decreased by 65% to 67%. This improvement primarily reflects the historical reduction in the initiation of smoking, advances in treatment, and early detection of certain cancers in black adolescents. However, black men had a 16% higher mortality rate than white men in the last five years, despite a 4% higher incidence. Black women had 10% higher mortality rates despite a 9% lower incidence than white women. The greater the inequality of mortality than incidence, the higher the mortality rate for many cancers. The cause of continued disparities is multifactorial, but mainly stems from inequality in the social determinants of health associated with structural racism.
“Future efforts need to actively develop mechanisms that reverse courses beyond research to help solve the health effects of structural racism,” the author writes.
