East County House Cat, who passed away last month, tested positive for avian flu – NBC 7 San Diego
The East County House cat, who passed away last month, is suspected of being the first case of cat flu (H5N1) across the county, local health officials said Wednesday.
Raw pet food is believed to be the source of infection in cats who died in mid-January. All other cases of cat avian flu across the state are believed to have occurred after animals had eaten raw food or raw milk, according to the county.
Cats mark the first mammals in San Diego County that test positive for avian flu or H5N1, but county health officials say no wildlife cases have been reported so far in 2025, and not in humans that remain at risk.
However, last year in San Diego County there were six cases of avian flu in wild seagulls.
“We are accused of the county's medical director of Epidemiology and Vaccination Services,” said Dr. Sheemashir, the county's department of epidemiology and vaccination services.
“The county is actively monitoring wild birds, expanding testing and monitoring people exposed to those animals in case they show symptoms. We are working with veterinarians, healthcare providers, farmers and wildlife groups to provide guidance and resources,” Shah continued.
Residents were encouraged to avoid consuming raw milk or providing raw milk or raw food to their pets.
