Colorado doctors warn of the possibility of “fourth dimension” as virus cases increase in children

Denver – Colorado doctors are warning about “fourth” concerns amid rising cases of norovirus, coronavirus, RSV and influenza among children.

Sierra Reaux-Mcneil's son, one-year-old Sirhan, is in and out of the doctor's office. He first came down with the flu.

“He started to get a fever, he was very running away and tired,” recalled Reaux-Mcneil. “He wasn't standing or trying to walk.”

It didn't take long for Silhan's symptoms to land him in the emergency room.

“It was really overwhelming and the fact that the hospital was already packed with sick children,” Reux-Mcneil said.

As soon as he felt better, the one-year-old signed RSV.

“We had to separate him from our brother and isolate him. He was crying to hang out with his brother. It was really heartbreaking,” Reux-Mcneil said.

Doctors have seen more and more cases like this.

“On this particular day we had the flu. The flu is positive, about 20 cases,” said Dr. Olukemi Akinrinola, pediatrician at AdventHealth. “It was really amazing. Some of them had the flu, they had RSV, they had the flu, they had RSV, and some had the flu, they had RSV, they had the covid.”

Some of these viruses have similar symptoms, such as runny nose, cough, and certain fever. Dr. Akinrinola said there are important differences that can help identify each disease.

In the case of influenza, the fever is very high – over 102°.

“If you see high fever, chills and lethargy, it's very likely that you're having the flu,” Aquinilinola explained.

For RSV, she said her nose was running non-stop and her cough was very deep.

“RSVs tend to deal with the lower respiratory tract, so you can hear a lot of deep cough and difficulty breathing,” she said. “You can wheeze or just see the retraction of the chest. That's the RSV.”

Covid can be complicated to identify beforehand, as it can be present without symptoms. However, according to Akinrinola, parents can know whether the disease coexists on the basis of lymph nodes.

“If you have a lot of lymph nodes, it can cause inflammation because your neck hurts and you feel like you're feeling it in some way in the lymph nodes,” Akinilinola said.

Noroviruses exist just like influenza. One notable difference is that the fever is not very high and usually stays between 99° and 101°. Norovirus has severe symptoms, but it doesn't last as long as it is influenza.

As the kids start to feel better, they haven't yet left the forest. Akinrinola said it was a time when it was susceptible to other illnesses.

After treatment, Silhan is feeling better.

“You know your child and trust your gut a bit during flu season. Honestly, it's probably safer than sorry,” Reux-Mcneil said.

Your doctor agrees that if your child is not feeling well it is always best to check them out with a professional. Akinilinola also urges parents to confirm that their child is equivalent to the flu.
