Doctors urge vaccines as supervisors and discuss the outbreak of common palmetto high heage for surgeons – NBC 6 South Florida
Measles outbreak Palmetto High School is still limited to one student, according to the Florida Department of Health and Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
The state surgeon general revealed that the student is a girl, but we don't know her name or age. On Thursday afternoon, Principal Jose Dotres spoke for the first time about the outbreak.
“We are confident that we are taking every step possible when working with the Department of Health,” Dotres said, adding that the University of Miami mobile vaccine unit is planning to go to school.
“They plan to provide vaccines in their community if they have students who may need MMR. Palmetto's vaccine rate is 99.7%,” Dotres added.
Florida surgeon general Dr. Joseph Radapop discussed the situation at a press conference and stopped urging parents to give their children a vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella.
“We also have measles vaccines available in that part of the state, for parents who want them, and that option is there too,” Dr. Radapop said.
Dr. Payal Shah, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Miami University Mirror School of Medicine, says the anti-Vax movement has led Florida to lose herd immunity to measles.
“I think that's really the main reason. Parents can be more and more hesitant to get a primary routine vaccine,” Dr. Shah said.
LADAPO supports the approach recommended by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, who is not a scientist or doctor.
“My friend, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has taken in some fever to recommend Vitamin A, which is a completely good idea for people with severe illness from measles,” Radapop said.
“There is no cure for measles,” Dr. Shah said, reflecting the consensus of the mainstream medical community. “So I think it's very important to fight misinformation, encourage vaccinations and really reassure parents and families that the vaccine is safe.”
Dr. Shah points out that despite persistent rumors, the MMR vaccine does not cause autism. Her own children receive shots and the pediatric community is united on the importance of getting vaccinated to protect each other.
“As a plea, we say we trust us. We have no other interest in the game except to keep our children safe,” Dr. Shah said.
Dr. Shah said he has received many questions from parents about how to protect babies in under 12 months. Usually, you're too young to receive an MMR shot. She sometimes says that pediatricians will vaccinate babies at least six months old if they live in the outbreak.
Dr. Shah also reminds parents that getting a second dose of MMR at age 4 is important to provide 97% lifetime immunity.
