Oregon's outbreak of dysentery causes at least 40 people to become ill: What do you know?

Where did the outbreak start?

Backstory:

County officials say there has been an increase in cases of invisibility in Multnomah County, Oregon since 2012.

“High case counts throughout 2024 reflect two separate occurrences of different strains of swell. The cases seen in 2025 are the result of stock propagation. Shigella sonnei Stocks introduced in Oregon in the spring of 2024,” the spokesman told Fox TV Stations.

The disease eventually spread to the Portland Metro area in the summer of 2024 and has since spread within and between the local incarcerated and immobilized populations, they added.

How many cases are there in Oregon?

In numbers:

There are 197 total cases nationwide for this particular strain.

61% of cases are in Multnomah County.

There are at least 14 different subclusters. That is, there are several transmission routes within the groups of different groups.

In 2024, there were 158 confirmed cases in Multnomah County.

What we know:

As of January, 40 new cases had been reported.

Things we don't know:

Data for February has not been confirmed.

However, preliminary data show that there were six confirmed cases, “three cases without cultured disease developed the disease and were reported in February.”

“The data is not yet confirmed, but the number of cases in February 2025 appears to be down from the number in January,” the spokesman said.

What causes the outbreak in maltonomas?

Health officials said there are several ways in which home bacteria can spread throughout the county.

• Some cases have been contracted through international travel to low-resource countries (less than 20%).
• Among cases without international travel, if feces spread through intimate (sexual) contact, it could account for half to two-thirds of all cases.
• Approximately one-third to half of cases in the past year have been in people who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
• We also identified the spread among non-contained social groups using drugs.

According to a spokesman, Shigella cases are spreading among people, not from one outbreak source, such as restaurants.

How to stop spreads

The most common source of transmission in Shigella is human to human, among several subgroups, so “there is no single simple answer to stop all diseases from spreading,” the spokesman says.

What's next:

The Multnomah County Health Department provides educational resources to teach people about avoiding disease transmission.

“They advise people to avoid food preparation, limit sexual contact and stay away from pools and other communal waters for at least two weeks after symptoms cease. People who work in food, childcare or healthcare facilities will be restricted from work until negative testing,” the spokesman said.

For those inappropriate, the department can provide additional support through short-term housing. This is described by health officials as “the best intervention to reduce spreads.”

Other prevention tips include:

• Frequently wash your hands
• Throw away dirty diapers in a covered lining trash can
• Disinfect areas that change diaper immediately after use
• Do not intake water from ponds, lakes, or untreated pools
• Avoid sexual contact with someone who suffers from or has recently recovered from diarrhea

Who is at risk?

Most people can recover from dysentery within a few days. But if it has not been treated for a long period of time, it can be fatal, Cleveland Clinic.

Those at the highest risk of suffering from severe complications of dysentery include:

• Young children
• People over 50
• Dehydrated or malnourished people
